Why homeowners choose Phantom

Fresh air all summer

Natural airflow cools your home and clears stuffiness, without letting insects in with it.

Keep the bugs out

Fine mesh stops flies, mosquitoes, and spiders getting in while your doors and windows stay open.

Light and views kept

High-visibility insect mesh keeps daylight and your outlook largely unchanged.

More privacy

Mesh and blind options soften sightlines into your home while you keep your view out.

Built for the coast

Tighter midge mesh keeps sandflies and midges out of homes near the water and estuaries.

Built for the farm

Handles real fly pressure on big country openings, with midge and solar mesh options when you need them.

The Serene window screen, up close

Pull-down mesh that retracts into a slim cassette - Serene fitted to awning windows in New Zealand homes, and the Blockout finish for bedrooms.

Why Kiwis choose Phantom window screens

  • Fresh air through open windows, with the insects kept out
  • Solar mesh to cut glare and heat where you need it
  • Insect-free ventilation for bedrooms and living spaces
  • Made to measure, colour-matched, and installed by our own team

Serene and Blockout options

Our Serene and Blockout screens are measured, finished, and installed by Phantom Screens NZ, so windows open freely while insects stay out.

Serene Retractable Window Screen - pull-down retractable mesh for awning, casement, sliding, and double-hung windows. Colour-matched fascia and trims, sized to the millimetre, with optional midge mesh or solar mesh for coastal locations.

Serene 100% Blockout - the same Serene hardware paired with blackout fabric, perfect for bedrooms and media rooms. It provides full light exclusion and privacy. Not an insect screen, but an optional upgrade on the same cassette system.

Mesh and finish options

  • Standard insect mesh (18x14) - balanced airflow and insect protection for most inland homes.
  • Midge mesh (18x18 no-see-um) - tighter weave for sandflies and midges around estuaries and coastal areas.
  • Solar or privacy mesh - metallised mesh that reduces heat and glare while keeping views.
  • Powder-coat colours - Serene hardware colour-matched to your joinery from the Dulux range, Matt as standard, with custom available.

The mesh options guide compares every weave - openness percentages included - and says which meshes the Serene cassette can take.

Retrofit or new build

Most Serene installs are retrofitted to aluminium joinery with neat trims that complement the frame. Timber details or recessed installs are coordinated with your builder. Magnetic panels adhere to most substrates, making them ideal for rentals and character homes.

Colours

The Serene colour range - any colour, matched to your joinery.

Screens are powder-coated from the Dulux range, Matt as standard, so the hardware disappears into your frames rather than standing out. The 20 we hold as standard cover about 85% of the homes we screen.

Custom colours

Not on the list? We match almost any colour you like, and anodised finishes are available as a custom option too - a small surcharge, confirmed at your quote.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What window types can Phantom Screens fit? +

Almost all - awning, casement, sliding, double-hung, louvre, and bifold windows can be screened with our Serene retractable system, and many angled skylights too.

How does the Serene retractable screen work? +

Serene pulls down smoothly inside slim side tracks, locks in place, and retracts into a discreet cassette when not needed.

Can you colour-match my frames? +

Yes. Phantom Screens NZ colour-matches Serene hardware to Dulux powder coats to suit your joinery - see the colour options guide.

Do you install or just supply? +

We measure, custom-build in Tauranga, and install with our own team, and take on larger projects nationwide by arrangement. See all the areas we install in.

How much do window screens cost? +

Pricing depends on size and mesh type. Send photos and rough sizes and we will come back with an indicative price.

How do Phantom window screens compare to cheaper screens? +

The difference is in the hardware and the finish. Serene retractable screens run on slim aluminium side tracks colour-matched to your joinery, with a smooth-retracting cassette built to be used every day for years, and Phantom-made screens carry our limited lifetime warranty with replaceable mesh. A lot of the difference is the internal componentry - on a quality screen the cords run over a brass wheel rather than through a drilled hole, and the springs last (we have screens on Beach Road still operating after 17 years). The easiest check is the feel: a cheaper screen feels flimsy or clunky to operate, often rattles, and uses a lot of plastic parts. We will be upfront about which option makes sense for your home.

What is the largest window you can screen? +

Serene retractable window screens are made to measure up to about 2.5 m wide and 2.2 m high. For openings larger than that we use a door-style system instead - send your sizes and we will confirm the right product.

Can you screen a skylight? +

Often, yes. The Serene retractable screen suits many skylights, as long as the skylight sits on an angle - the screen needs some pitch to run on, so flat roof windows are not suitable. Send a photo of your skylight through the quote form and we will confirm whether it can be screened.

How long does it take to get my window screens? +

Every screen is custom-made to measure, so the lead time depends on the product and the time of year - we confirm a firm timeframe when you accept your quote. The install itself is usually completed in a single visit.

What care and maintenance is needed? +

A seasonal vacuum of the mesh plus a damp-cloth wipe of the tracks and cassette keeps a Serene running smoothly. Mesh cartridges are replaceable and parts are serviceable long-term. The full routine is in our care guide.

Are you the same company as Phantom Screens in the US or Canada? +

Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run, and part of the wider Phantom Screens family. Phantom in Canada leads much of the group's research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too low to make them here. Most of our screens are made to measure in our own Tauranga workshop.
