Why homeowners choose Phantom

Sun and glare control

Outdoor blinds cut harsh sun and glare so your deck or patio stays usable for longer.

Keep the bugs out

Fine mesh stops flies, mosquitoes, and spiders getting in while your doors and windows stay open.

Fresh air all summer

Natural airflow cools your home and clears stuffiness, without letting insects in with it.

More privacy

Mesh and blind options soften sightlines into your home while you keep your view out.

Built for the coast

Tighter midge mesh keeps sandflies and midges out of homes near the water and estuaries.

Built for the farm

Handles real fly pressure on big country openings, with midge and solar mesh options when you need them.

The Executive outdoor screen

Motorised, captured-edge screens for big spans - here is the Executive in use.

What is an outdoor screen?

An outdoor screen, also called an outdoor blind, is a vertical fabric panel that descends from a cassette usually used to enclose patios and pergolas. Executive screens travel on side channels to seal the opening, stopping flies or mosquitoes, the sun or a breeze so you can dine outside longer without flapping plastic blinds or temporary nets. The captured zipper system holds the fabric taut year-round outdoors.

Executive housing sizes

100 mm housing - compact, for spans up to 3.5 m wide. Ideal for retrofits where space is limited.

140 mm housing - mid-range, for spans up to 6.2 m wide.

180 mm housing - high-capacity, for spans up to 12 m wide (the largest track-guided motorised screen available globally) and heavier fabrics such as PVC. Oversized 8-12 m installs use internal support cradles on the roller.

The fabric range

The same Executive frame takes the full range of mesh and fabric openness, so the screen is matched to what the space needs rather than the other way round:

  • Insect mesh - clear-view standard weave for airflow and near-unobstructed views, the finer NoSeeUms weave for sandflies on bush and coastal sites, or PawScreen Lite where animals share the space.
  • Solar and privacy fabrics - Visiontex and E-Screen weaves that cut glare, heat, and UV while holding the daytime view; the more closed the weave, the more privacy and shade.
  • Weather and blockout - clear PVC for full enclosure on request (for almost every opening we recommend a mesh instead), and blockout fabric as a special order for indoor Executives behind big glass.

The fabric is confirmed at the measure-up against the orientation, view, and exposure of the opening. The mesh options guide compares every weave - openness percentages included - across our door, window, and outdoor ranges.

Use cases

  • Patios - seal open patios for barbecues without blocking views. Mesh retains airflow and keeps insects out.
  • Pergolas - recess Executive screens into timber or aluminium pergolas for clean lines.
  • Decks - protect coastal decks from sandflies, gusts, and sideways rain while keeping glass balustrades clear.
  • Commercial - ideal for hospitality courtyards needing flexible enclosure.

Motorised or manual

Every Phantom Executive screen is motorised - handheld remotes, wall switches, sun/wind sensors, or home automation - because large screens are heavy to move by hand. For a hand-operated, no-power alternative we fit Ziptrak zip-track blinds, our secondary budget option for smaller spans. See the dedicated manual outdoor blinds and patio blinds pages for more detail.

Colours

Any colour - powder-coated from the Dulux range.

Screens are powder-coated from the Dulux range, Matt as standard, so the hardware disappears into your frames rather than standing out. The 20 we hold as standard cover about 85% of the homes we screen.

Custom colours

Not on the list? We match almost any colour you like, and anodised finishes are available as a custom option too - a small surcharge, confirmed at your quote.

Fabrics

The E-Screen solar range

Executive screens are typically made in E-Screen - a tight architectural solar weave in 6% or 10% openness that cuts glare, heat, and UV while holding the outward view, backed by the fabric maker's 10-year warranty.

Also available

Clear-view insect mesh on the same Executive frame; clear PVC is available on request (typically on Ziptrak). We bring physical samples to the measure-up.

Visiontex privacy weaves

When privacy or deeper shade matters more than openness, the Visiontex family runs from 20% down to 0% openness in a muted, architectural palette - these are the stocked Plus 94 colourways, with more available to order. Ziptrak blinds typically run Visiontex.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What openings can Executive screens cover? +

A single Executive screen covers up to 12 m wide x 5 m high - the largest track-guided motorised screen available globally. Smaller 100 mm and 140 mm housings suit spans to 3.5 m and 6.2 m. We can also link screens for wrap-around decks and recess them into pergolas or soffits.

Are they motorised? +

Yes - every Phantom Executive screen is motorised: Alpha motors as standard (SIMU or Somfy on request) with handheld remotes, wall switches, sun and wind sensors, home automation, and SmartStop automatic braking. There is no hand-cranked Executive; when you want a hand-operated screen we fit a separate Ziptrak zip-track blind that you move up and down by hand.

Can they handle coastal wind and salt air? +

The captured zipper retention system keeps the fabric locked in the side channels through gusts; for very exposed sites we specify heavier bottom bars, wind sensors, or step up to the 180 mm housing. The powder-coated hardware is finished for year-round outdoor use, including coastal sites. For when to use a blind and when to retract it, see our outdoor blinds and wind guide.

Do they offer privacy? +

Solar mesh options provide daytime privacy while keeping views - the more closed the Visiontex weave, the more privacy and shade. For closing the space against weather, choose clear PVC.

What will the fabric and colour actually look like? +

Outdoor screen fabrics are technical meshes and PVC, not canvas, and they read differently depending on the openness of the weave and the light. An open insect mesh is barely there; a tighter solar or privacy mesh looks more solid and cuts glare and heat; clear PVC is glass-like. Colours can look lighter in bright sun than in a photo, so we bring physical fabric samples to the measure-up and check them against your orientation, view, and exposure before anything is made - so the finished screen is what you expected, not a surprise.

How are outdoor blinds quoted and installed? +

Send photos and rough sizes of the opening through the quote form and we will come back with an indicative price. Once you are happy, we visit to measure precisely, then manufacture and install - most installs are completed within a day.

Outdoor blinds or outdoor screens - what's the difference? +

They are the same product - the terms are used interchangeably in New Zealand. The mesh-fabric versions, which keep insects out while holding the airflow and view, are often called outdoor screens; the clear PVC and blockout versions, which close a space against the weather, are usually called outdoor blinds. The same Executive frame and captured-zipper system takes either, so the choice is about the fabric, not a different product.

Why does the mesh show small ripples near the edges? +

Every screen and blind built on a step-down roller shows slight ripples or creases near the mesh edges - the zip edges need room to roll onto the roller, so the fabric folds gently on itself as it winds. It is inherent to every brand's zip-track system, it varies blind to blind and with the weather, and it softens in warmer weather and the longer the blind is down. It has no effect on performance or durability.

What care and maintenance is needed? +

Rinse the mesh or PVC with fresh water now and then (especially near the coast), keep the side channels clear of debris, and let a wet screen dry before rolling it up. The full routine is in our care guide.

Are you the same company as Phantom Screens in the US or Canada? +

Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run, and part of the wider Phantom Screens family. Phantom in Canada leads much of the group's research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too low to make them here. Most of our screens are made to measure in our own Tauranga workshop.
