Custom-made retractable and pleated door screens for sliders, bifolds, French doors, and more - retrofitted or built-in, protecting New Zealand homes since 1999.
Our retractable door screens are one system - the cassette housing simply scales with the span of your opening. Every screen is custom-made to fit and colour-matched to your joinery; you choose the opening, we size the housing.
45 mm housing (MeshLock) suits front and back doors and single sliders to about 1.2 m. The mesh is retained in the tracks to resist blow-outs, with a tidy retrofit finish.
60 mm housing (MeshLock) covers wider sliders and stackers to about 2.0 m - the same discreet cassette, sized up for the span.
80 mm housing (Wall Screen) handles oversized openings - bifolds, stackers, and wide sliders up to about 9 m with standard insect mesh: a single screen covers up to about 4.5 m, and two screens meet in the middle for the widest runs. Heavier meshes run to smaller spans, confirmed at the measure.
Brio 612 (pleated) is the alternative to a retractable cassette: pleated mesh with no spring tension, so the panel stays exactly where you leave it. Lower profile (no cassette), light and easy to operate, with a post-less corner option - suited to architectural builds and retirement villas.
The mesh options guide covers every weave in detail, including which products each mesh is available on.
Most projects are retrofitted to existing aluminium joinery, with neat surface mounting that complements the door frame. Where timber or recessed details are preferred, we coordinate with your joiner or builder to integrate the cassette or pleat pocket during the build.
Not sure which way to go? Send a photo and a rough opening size via the quote form and we will confirm the right product, span limits, and an indicative price.
Based in Tauranga, our own team makes, installs, and services every screen.

Colours
Screens are powder-coated from the Dulux range, Matt as standard, so the hardware disappears into your frames rather than standing out. The 20 we hold as standard cover about 85% of the homes we screen.

FAQ
Almost always, yes - single doors, French pairs, sliding and stacking doors, bi-folds, doors that swing in or out, and even servery openings. Send us a quick photo and a rough opening size and we can confirm the best screen type and an indicative price - usually without a site visit.
A few situations need a different approach, and we would rather flag them before you buy. Door hardware that sits proud, such as some lever handles or pull bars, can foul a retractable screen, so we check the clearances at the measure-up and suggest an alternative screen or a small hardware tweak where needed. Very wide openings beyond a single screen's span are handled by meeting two screens in the middle or stepping up to a door-style system. Send a photo with your enquiry and we will tell you honestly what will and won't work for your opening.
Yes - most of our installations are retrofitted to existing aluminium joinery with a tidy surface-mounted finish. On new builds we coordinate recess details with your joiner or builder so the cassette disappears into the frame.
Phantom MeshLock and Wall Screen both keep the mesh retained in the tracks to resist blow-outs. Brio 612 runs on high-strength tensioning cords, with an optional high-performance kit that lifts wind resistance by up to about 15% for exposed sites.
No. Standard insect mesh is high-visibility, so daylight and views stay largely unchanged, and the screen retracts fully into its cassette when you are not using it.
A seasonal vacuum of the mesh plus a damp-cloth wipe of the tracks or housings keeps the system running smoothly. Mesh cartridges are replaceable and parts are serviceable long-term. The full routine is in our care guide.
Every screen is made to measure, so the price depends on the opening size, screen type, and mesh. Send photos and rough sizes through the quote form and we will come back with an indicative price - we only book a measure-up once you're happy with the solution and product.
Most of the price difference is in the frame, the finish, and the internal componentry, and it shows over time. Our retractable screens are built on solid aluminium extrusions with a durable powder-coated finish, so the housing and tracks stand up to coastal conditions and daily use rather than flexing or fading. A lot of the difference is inside the screen: on a quality screen the cords run over a brass wheel rather than through a drilled hole, and the parts are serviceable - door screens we fitted on Beach Road at Mount Maunganui were still going after 17 years, and when they finally stopped retracting the fix was a new spring, not a new screen. The easiest check is the feel: a cheaper screen feels flimsy or clunky to operate, often rattles, and uses a lot of plastic parts. Phantom-made screens carry our limited lifetime warranty, and the mesh cartridges and parts are replaceable, so a screen is serviced rather than thrown away. A cheaper kit screen is usually a thinner extrusion with fixed mesh and a short warranty - less up front, but more often replaced.
Our own teams install across the upper North Island, from Taupo north - Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty. We take on larger or architectural projects nationwide by arrangement. See all the areas we install in.
Most openings are covered. MeshLock suits single doors and sliders to about 1.2 m wide (45 mm housing) or 2.0 m wide (60 mm housing); a single Wall Screen spans large sliders and bifolds up to about 4.5 m with standard insect mesh, and two screens meet in the middle to reach openings of about 9 m. Heavier meshes (solar, pet) run to smaller spans - we confirm the limit for your mesh with your quote. Beyond that, the Executive screen spans up to about 12 m. Send your rough sizes and we will confirm the right system.
Every screen is custom-made to measure, so the lead time depends on the product and the time of year - we confirm a firm timeframe when you accept your quote. The install itself is usually completed in a single visit.
Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run, and part of the wider Phantom Screens family. Phantom in Canada leads much of the group's research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too low to make them here. Most of our screens are made to measure in our own Tauranga workshop.
