Insect Screens for Coastal & Beach Homes

Keep the sandflies and midges out and the sea view in - screens that disappear when you are not using them.

Screens made for life by the water

Coastal and beach homes get the best of the outdoors and the worst of the biters. Sandflies and midges come off the estuary at dusk, the salt air is hard on anything that rusts, and the big sliders and stackers that frame the view are exactly the openings you want to leave open to the sea breeze. Phantom retractable screens suit all of it: a fitted Phifer mesh keeps flies, mosquitoes, and sandflies out, a tighter midge mesh handles the worst estuary sites, and the whole screen retracts out of sight - and out of the weather - when you are not using it.

The hardware is powder-coated and the mesh is a synthetic weave, so salt air does not corrode them the way it does bare metal. A rinse with fresh water now and then is all the care they need.

Big openings, uninterrupted views

The Wall Screen spans wide sliders and stackers - up to about 4.5 m per screen, two meeting in the middle for openings to about 9 m - and the motorised Executive outdoor screen goes wider again to enclose a deck against wind, glare, and insects. Every one retracts fully into a slim cassette, so the view is never compromised.

Made to measure, installed by our own team

Every screen is made to measure and installed by our own team, from the coastal Bay of Plenty and Waikato up through Auckland and Northland, with larger or further-out coastal work nationwide by arrangement. Send photos and rough sizes for an indicative price - no visit needed to get started.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will screens keep sandflies and midges out at the beach? +

Yes. Coastal and estuary homes get the worst of the sandflies and midges, especially at dusk. Standard insect mesh stops flies and mosquitoes; where the biters are bad we fit a tighter midge mesh (no-see-um), so you can leave the doors open to the sea breeze without the bites.

How do the screens hold up to salt air? +

They are built to live outside. The hardware is powder-coated and the mesh is a synthetic weave, so salt air does not rust them the way it does bare steel. A rinse with fresh water now and then keeps everything running smoothly - the same easy care as your joinery.

Can you screen a big opening that frames the view? +

Yes, and the point is that the screen disappears when you are not using it, so it never gets in the way of the view. A single Wall Screen spans up to about 4.5 m, two meeting in the middle reach about 9 m, and the Executive outdoor screen goes wider again - all retracting fully out of sight into a slim cassette.

What about wind on an exposed coastal deck? +

Outdoor blinds run their fabric in captured side channels so it stays firm in a sea breeze, and a motorised blind can take a wind sensor that retracts it automatically in a gust. See our guide to [outdoor blinds and wind](/guides/outdoor-blinds-and-wind/).

Do you install along the coast from Taupo north? +

Yes. Our own teams cover the coastal Bay of Plenty (Mount Maunganui, Pāpāmoa, Whangamatā, Ōhope), Auckland, Northland, and the Waikato coast, with larger or further-out coastal work nationwide by arrangement.

Are you the same company as Phantom Screens in the US or Canada? +

Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run, and part of the wider Phantom Screens family. Phantom in Canada leads much of the group's research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too low to make them here. Our window screens are made in our Tauranga workshop, and every screen is measured, fitted, and serviced by our own team.
