Best fit for bi-fold doors

A bi-fold folds right back to open an entire wall, so a fixed screen would defeat the point. The screen has to cover the full span and then get out of the way. Two Phantom systems do exactly that, screening bi-fold openings up to about 9 m: with standard insect mesh a single screen covers up to about 4.5 m, and two screens meet in the middle for wider runs. The retractable Wall Screen keeps the mesh retained in its tracks; Brio 612 is a pleated screen with a light, easy action and a post-less corner option.

Wall Screen or Brio 612?

The choice is about look and action, not size - both span the same openings and both can be recessed. The Wall Screen is spring-assisted: it retracts back into its cassette on release, with stopping points you can set and a quick-release latch, and its recessed track and channel options hide the housing in a new build. Brio 612 has no spring tension - the pleated panel stays exactly where you leave it - and sits lower-profile because there is no cassette, with a fully pocketed option for new builds. See the system comparison on our door screens page.

Mesh and finish

Standard insect mesh suits most homes, midge mesh suits coastal and estuary properties, and pet mesh stands up to households where the doors get heavy use - see our mesh options for every weave and which screens carry it. Hardware is powder-coated and colour-matched to the Dulux range so the cassette or pleat housing blends into your joinery - see colour options.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you screen my bi-fold doors? +

Almost always, yes. Bi-folds open the whole wall, so the screen has to span the full opening and then get out of the way. The Phantom Wall Screen (retractable) and Brio 612 (pleated) handle openings up to about 9 m - each screen covers up to about 4.5 m, and on wider runs two screens meet in the middle (Wall Screen figures are with standard insect mesh; heavier meshes run to smaller spans). MeshLock is sized for single doors, so it is not the fit for a bi-fold.

What is the difference between the Wall Screen and Brio 612 for a bi-fold? +

The Wall Screen is a retractable cassette - spring-assisted, with the mesh retained in its tracks, stopping points you can set along the opening, and a quick-release latch. Brio 612 is a pleated panel with no spring tension - it stays wherever you leave it and has a lower profile because there is no cassette, plus a post-less corner option. Both can be recessed: the Wall Screen has recessed track and channel profiles, and Brio 612 has a fully pocketed option for new builds. We will recommend the better fit for your opening.

Do I have to fold the screen back every time I open the doors? +

No. The screen sits to the side when you are not using it - retracted into a slim cassette for the Wall Screen, or folded into a slim pleat stack for Brio 612 - so the bi-folds work as normal and the opening stays clear.

Can a screen be retrofitted to my existing bi-folds? +

Usually, yes, with a tidy surface-mounted finish to the existing joinery. On new builds we coordinate the recess details with your joiner or builder so the cassette or pleat pocket disappears into the frame.

How does it handle wind across such a wide opening? +

The Wall Screen keeps the mesh retained in the top and bottom tracks to resist blow-outs. Brio 612 runs on high-strength tensioning cords, and for exposed sites an optional high-performance kit lifts its wind resistance by up to about 15%. Both are built for the wide openings bi-folds create.

Are you the same company as Phantom Screens in the US or Canada? +

Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run, and part of the wider Phantom Screens family. Phantom in Canada leads much of the group's research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too low to make them here. Our window screens are made in our Tauranga workshop, and every screen is measured, fitted, and serviced by our own team.
