Cats and dogs are hard on insect screens - paws, claws, and the determined nudge of a pet that wants out. Standard mesh stretches, pops out of its tracks, or tears. Our pet-friendly screens use tougher materials so you can leave the door open for the breeze and the pets without wrecking the screen.
Why pets need different screens
A normal insect mesh is woven for visibility and airflow, not for a labrador leaning on it. Our pet screens use a claw-resistant pet mesh - a vinyl-coated polyester that takes paws and claws and flexes back instead of tearing or popping out of its tracks. It keeps flies, mosquitoes, and spiders out exactly like standard mesh.

Do insect screens hurt cats' claws? +
No. Pet mesh is a claw-resistant vinyl-coated polyester designed to take paws and claws without harming the animal or tearing - it flexes rather than snagging like standard mesh can.
What about cats and dogs that jump at the screen? +
The claw-resistant pet mesh flexes and springs back rather than tearing, so it handles a jumping cat or a leaning dog far better than standard mesh. No insect screen is a pet barrier, though - if your pet repeatedly charges the screen, tell us about the opening and we will advise the right setup.
Do you fit heavy-duty wire or anti-jump mesh? +
We do not use wire. The heavy-duty option often searched for as wire or anti-jump mesh is, in our range, a claw-resistant pet screen - a vinyl-coated weave that delivers the toughness without wire, and without the industrial look.
Will a pet mesh screen still keep insects out? +
Yes. Pet mesh keeps out flies, mosquitoes, and spiders just like standard insect mesh - it is simply built tougher.
Can you upgrade my existing screen doors to pet mesh? +
In most cases, yes - pet mesh is an upgrade on our retractable door screens, wall screens, and outdoor blinds. Send a photo and rough sizes and we will confirm the options for your openings.
Which mesh is right for a big dog? +
The claw-resistant pet mesh - it flexes when a large dog leans or paws at the door and springs back into shape. Tell us about your dog when you enquire and we will confirm the right setup for the opening.
Are you the same company as Phantom Screens in the US or Canada? +
Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run, and part of the wider Phantom Screens family. Phantom in Canada leads much of the group's research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too low to make them here. Our window screens are made in our Tauranga workshop, and every screen is measured, fitted, and serviced by our own team.
