“I cannot believe we still get the same view with these screens installed. They blend in seamlessly and work perfectly.”

Pāpāmoa has grown from a strip of baches into one of the country’s biggest beach suburbs, and the way it has grown shapes the work we do here. Long, flat streets of single-level homes run behind the dunes from Pāpāmoa Beach out through Wairakei towards Te Tumu, nearly all of them built for indoor-outdoor living - kitchen, living room, and patio connected by wide sliding doors. We fit retractable insect screens, fly screen doors, and outdoor blinds across the suburb, every one made to measure and fitted by our own team, based just up the road in Tauranga.
Most of Pāpāmoa is newer housing - brick-and-tile on a concrete slab, with aluminium joinery in today’s darker colours and a stacker or ranchslider opening the living space to the outdoors. Retractable screens suit these homes well. The cassette is slim, the hardware is powder-coated so it can be matched to dark joinery instead of standing out against it, and nothing has to be built in during construction - we measure and fit after you move in, which is how most of our new-build work here arrives. Single sliding and hinged doors take a retractable door screen, and the widest stacker and bifold openings can be screened to around 4.5 metres per side, with two screens meeting in the middle for the largest of them.
The onshore breeze is half the reason people live here, and on a warm evening the whole suburb has its doors open. The catch comes at dusk, when midges and sandflies drift up from the dunes and the wetland reserves that thread through the newer subdivisions. For homes near the beach or the waterways we fit a tighter midge mesh in place of the standard 18x14 weave, and claw-resistant pet mesh handles the family dog. Whatever the mesh, the screen retracts fully out of sight when it is not in use.

FAQ
Yes, and nothing needs to be planned in during construction. Screens are measured once the joinery is in and fitted on a single visit, with hardware powder-coated to sit against the darker greys, greens, and blacks common on newer Pāpāmoa builds rather than standing out from them. A lot of our new-build work here comes from owners fitting screens soon after they move in.
Most Pāpāmoa living areas open to the patio through a ranchslider or a wide stacker, and both can be screened. Single sliding and hinged doors take a retractable screen that disappears into a slim cassette beside the opening. The really wide stacker and bifold openings can be screened to around 4.5 metres from one side, or roughly double that with two screens meeting in the middle.
Yes. The standard mesh keeps out flies and mosquitoes, and for the smaller midges and sandflies that lift off the dunes and the wetland reserves at dusk we fit a tighter midge mesh, which holds them out while keeping your outlook clear.

We're part of the wider Phantom Screens family, and Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run. Phantom in Canada leads much of the international research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too small to make them here. Our window screens are made in our Tauranga workshop, and every screen is measured, fitted, and serviced by our own team across the upper North Island.
