“I cannot believe we still get the same view with these screens installed. They blend in seamlessly and work perfectly.”

Katikati sits between the Kaimai foothills and the northern reaches of Tauranga Harbour, in some of the most sheltered growing country in the Bay of Plenty. The warm, settled climate that suits the kiwifruit and avocado orchards suits insects just as well, so doors and windows here need to hold out flies and mosquitoes for a long stretch of the year. Phantom Screens NZ fits made-to-measure retractable insect screens, fly screen doors, and outdoor blinds with our own team - our workshop is in Tauranga, half an hour down the road, and we are regularly in Katikati.
New Zealand’s mural town is first and foremost an orchard town. A lot of the homes we screen around Katikati come with land - kiwifruit and avocado blocks toward Aongatete and Tahawai, lifestyle properties off the back roads, and homesteads tucked in behind shelter belts. Sheltered air and a packhouse economy that runs on long growing seasons mean real insect pressure, and rural homes built around ranchsliders, French doors, and wide awning windows give it plenty of ways in. Our retractable screens are made for exactly those openings and pull back out of sight when they are not needed. The standard 18x14 mesh keeps the outlook over the block clear, and claw-resistant pet mesh stands up to the orchard dogs that live at the back door.
North of town the harbour narrows toward the Athenree estuary, with Waihī Beach over the hill at the end of the corridor and Kauri Point out on the harbour. Homes near the tidal flats and the beach see sandflies and midges lift off the water on still evenings, and for those we fit a tighter midge mesh in place of the standard weave. Baches and beach homes that open onto a deck through sliders or bifolds suit our retractable door screens, which draw across the wide opening and disappear again when the day cools off.

In town, out on a block at Aongatete or Tahawai, or up at Athenree and Waihī Beach, it is the same local team from first quote to final fit.

FAQ
Katikati's warm, sheltered microclimate between the Kaimai Range and Tauranga Harbour is exactly why the district grows so much fruit - and it gives flies, mosquitoes, and harbour midges a long season too. Between the orchards, the shelter belts, and the harbour edge, homes here see more insect traffic than most, so screens that let you leave doors and windows open earn their keep from spring right through autumn.
Yes. Every screen is made to measure for its opening, so the older weatherboard homes around town are as straightforward as a new build in one of the subdivisions or an orchard homestead down a rural road. The cassette is slim and powder-coated to match your joinery, and the screen retracts fully out of sight when you are not using it.
Yes. Our Bay of Plenty team covers Katikati and the whole northern corridor - Tahawai, Athenree, Waihī Beach, and Kauri Point, plus the Aongatete side toward Tauranga. For homes near the estuary and the beach we fit a tighter midge mesh that holds out the sandflies and midges the standard weave lets through, while keeping the view.
We're part of the wider Phantom Screens family, and Phantom Screens NZ is New Zealand owned and run. Phantom in Canada leads much of the international research and development, and a few of our door and outdoor ranges are made to measure by Phantom in Australia, where our New Zealand volumes are too small to make them here. Our window screens are made in our Tauranga workshop, and every screen is measured, fitted, and serviced by our own team across the upper North Island.
