What to do if your Serene screen jams

Now and then a Serene window screen is pulled down and doesn't retract. Most of the time you can free it yourself in a few seconds - here is how.

The Serene retractable window screen is a great product, but on a rare occasion it can jam - you pull the mesh down and it no longer retracts back up. It might stick at the bottom, or part way up.

Inside the screen there is a small bearing that can lock. It does an important job during installation and repairs, but in everyday use it should never engage. When it does, the screen stops rolling itself back up. The good news is that you can almost always free it in a few seconds.

Free it yourself - most cases

Don’t force the screen or yank the mesh. Usually a gentle “jog” is all it needs:

  1. Take hold of the bottom bar.
  2. Pull the mesh down a small way, then let it go.
  3. The screen re-engages and retracts on its own.

If it’s stuck at the bottom

Sometimes the screen jams right at the bottom and won’t lift at all. In that case:

  1. Gently lift the bottom bar up a little to free some mesh.
  2. With that bit of slack, give the mesh a small jog - pull it down slightly.
  3. It catches and starts to pull itself back up into the track.

If it keeps happening

A one-off jam is normal - for most screens it happens once in a blue moon, or never. If a screen jams again and again, the bearing needs attention, and that is a quick repair for us. Get in touch and we’ll sort it, rather than you wrestling with it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my Phantom Serene screen retract? +

Usually a small bearing inside the screen has momentarily locked. A gentle jog of the mesh - pull it down a little and let it go - almost always frees it so it rolls back up. If it keeps happening, the bearing needs a quick repair.

My screen is stuck at the bottom - what do I do? +

Lift the bottom bar up slightly to free a little mesh, then give the mesh a small jog downward. It will catch and pull itself back up into the track. Don't force it.

Should I pull harder or use a lubricant to fix a jam? +

No. Don't force the mesh or yank the bar - the fix is a gentle jog, not force. Keep oil-based sprays such as WD40 away from the screen. If a jam keeps recurring, get in touch and we'll repair it.

Does a jam mean the screen is broken? +

No. It is almost always the internal bearing engaging for a moment, which frees with a jog. Only if it happens repeatedly does it need a repair, and the screen is fully serviceable either way.
