How to Order Your Magnetic Insect Screen
Step 1: Measure Your Window Accurately
- Width – Measure from the outside edge to outside edge of where the screen will sit. The width measurement is the overall size of the supplied screen so allow surface for the magnets to stick to.
If measuring the daylight opening, add 26mm (2 x 13mm frame width each side) to ensure proper fit.
- Height – Measure from the top edge to the bottom edge (overall measurement). Add 26mm if measuring the daylight opening or 13mm for the frame on top and the bottom.
Step 2: Choose Your Options
Frame Colour – Available in select colours. If a custom colour is needed, you can purchase powder coat paint cans with your order here, and we will colour the screen during manufacturing. However, painted fly screen frames may chip or flake over time, so we recommend selecting a standard colour where possible.
Mesh Type – The standard charcoal 18×14 insect mesh is suitable for 98% of applications. For areas with smaller insects like midges, the SOL1818 mesh is available, featuring a finer weave with reduced airflow.
Step 3: Place Your Order

- ✅ Pre-aligned for accuracy – The magnetic tape is already aligned when you receive it. Install it in the same order to maintain correct polarity.
- ❌ Do not flip or reverse the tape – Doing so will prevent the screen from sitting squarely and may weaken its attachment.
DIY Magnetic Insect Screen Questions
What should I use to clean the joinery before applying the magnetic strip?
Use commercial cleaning alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) to properly clean the surface before applying the magnetic strip.
💡 Why is this important?
If the surface isn’t cleaned thoroughly, the adhesive will weaken over time, causing the magnetic insect screen to fall off within weeks or months.
For best results, wipe the surface, let it dry completely, and then apply firm pressure to the magnet to ensure a long-lasting bond.
There is no surface to stick the magnet, can I still screen the window?
Yes, this is a common issue with windows on sliding doors where there is no surface for the magnet to adhere to.
To solve this, you can order a plastic angle from our supplier here.
The plastic angle comes with pre-applied double-sided tape on one side for easy installation. Simply trim it to size, peel back the tape, and stick it to your window joinery to create a surface for the magnetic strip to attach securely.
I'd really like a custom colour. How do I order this?
If you want a custom colour, you’ll need to order a can of paint along with your magnetic screen order.
We will apply the colour to the frame before manufacture, but please note:
⚠ Painting plastic is a good option for aesthetics, but over time, the paint may start to flake before the screen itself needs replacing.
For the most durable finish, consider selecting a standard frame colour.
How does the magnet stick to my wooden or aluminium joinery?
The magnetic screen does not stick directly to your joinery. Instead, it attaches to a magnetic tape that is first applied to the window frame.
🛠 How it works:
- Apply the magnetic tape to your window joinery. This tape stays in place year-round.
- The magnetic screen then attaches to the tape, allowing for easy removal when needed.
💡 Important: If you decide to remove the screen in the off-season, the magnetic tape will remain on the joinery unless you choose to remove it.
Can I install a magnetic screen if my awning window latches are in the way?
Yes, you can! Here’s how:
✅ When the window is open, the latches move out of the way, allowing the screen to attach properly to the magnetic tape on the joinery.
✅ If part of the latch remains in place and blocks the magnetic tape, simply trim the tape around the latch, leaving a small gap. This will not affect the screen’s ability to stay securely attached to the rest of the tape.
💡 Tip: Ensure the surrounding tape is firmly applied for the best hold.
I have a groove in the joinery. Should I put the magnetic tape inside it and measure from inside the groove
No, we don’t recommend this.
While it may seem tempting, if the screen sits inside the groove, it will be difficult to open and close. You would need to bend the screen frame to remove it, which can reduce its lifespan.
✅ Best approach:
- Measure from the outside edge rather than inside the groove.
- If there’s not much surface for the magnetic tape to stick to, it’s still better to let the magnetic tape and screen frame slightly overhang the opening for a secure fit.
