Magnetic Fly Screens
Magnetic screens for flies and insects are a very popular midrange option for windows and smaller openings in New Zealand.
They come in different colours, and while they may not be the most visually appealing when fitted, they are highly effective in keeping insects out.

What are the benefits of retractable insect screens compared to traditional hinged or sliding screens?
Retractable insect screens for windows retract up into a cassette when not needed, making them a much better all-around solution for windows. They are also more aesthetically pleasing and don’t disrupt the view and last 2-4 times longer. Take a look at the Serene window screen for more information.
How much do fly screens for windows cost?
Insect screens for windows can vary greatly in price depending on the quality of materials used and the type of product chosen.
For example, using high-quality retractable window screens, such as Phantom Screens, can cost as little as $350 for a small window, but the price can reach $600+ for large openings.
Magnetic screens are typically 20-30% less expensive than retractable screens, but there is a trade-off (even when using the best quality) in terms of aesthetics and longevity. They may need to be replaced 2-3 times more frequently than retractable screens over the course of several decades.
It is best to send an enquiry for a better indication of the price for your situation.
How do fly screens stop mosquitoes?
Fly screens have small mesh holes that allow fresh air to flow through while preventing mosquitoes from entering the home. The mesh size is small enough to prevent mosquitoes from fitting through, while still allowing light and maintaining the view. Phantom Screens offers several mesh options in various colours and depths of view.
Are good quality window insect screens worth it?
Yes, good quality insect screens are worth it, as they can save money on fly spray and cooling costs, as well as prevent damage from fly poop and the annoyance of flies and mosquitoes. They also provide a long-term cost-effective solution. Phantom Screens offers a variety of mesh options that are measured to fit the framing and outdoor area to ensure no entry points for insects.
What is an insect screen for a window?
An insect screen for a window is a type of mosquito net that is placed over the opening of a window to protect against flying insects such as mosquitoes, flies, bees, wasps, pollen, and even spiders. It is made of an insect mesh that is filled with holes that are large enough to allow the breeze through but small enough to keep insects out, thus creating a healthy living space with fresh air.
Are magnetic fly screens any good?
Magnetic fly screens are a popular option for screening open windows, they involve a magnet that is glued around the window frame, and an insect mesh with a magnetised flexible border or frame sticks to the magnet on the window frame. The quality of magnetic fly screens can vary depending on the materials used. We use the best quality on the market, however, compared to our Serene retractable screens, they may have limitations in terms of aesthetics and longevity. Magnetic fly screens generally have a lifespan of 5-10 years while Serene screens are made of powder-coated aluminium and are designed to last more than 20 years.
What is the warranty on the screens?
Limited lifetime! Please see our resources page for the latest warranty document.
Can the aluminium frames be powder-coated and colour-matched to existing joinery?
Retractable insect screens can be powder-coated in a variety of colours, including matching existing joinery using the Dulux powder-coat colour range.
Where are the fly window screens made?
Phantom Screens manufactures retractable fly screens for windows and some door screen components in Tauranga, New Zealand. The mesh component for the screen doors is made to order in our sister factory in Australia and shipped to us on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.
How to care for window screens after they are installed?
Serene window screens require occasional cleaning, lubricating the tracks and removing debris, and storing the screens away when they are not in use in order to extend their lifespan.
If Magnetic window screens are ever removed they must be laid out flat for storage as the plastic frame won’t last long if bent.
How are the window screens fitted?
The retractable insect screens for windows are fitted to the inside of the joinery, with two tracks on either side and a cassette at the top where the screen rolls away. The tracks guide the mesh and bottom bar down as the screen is pulled. The screens are designed to ensure there are no gaps, preventing any bugs from entering the home. The window screens should always be fitted by Phantom-trained experts, however, in some cases, the product may be available for supply only.
Do you offer a pet mesh for window screens?
Not on window screens. Yes, we do provide pet-proof screens, known as Wall screens or Executive screens for doors and outdoor areas, that are designed to withstand the force of pets pushing or pulling on the mesh.
Unfortunately, this option is not currently available for window screens, however, it’s not a common concern as we rarely receive complaints about pets breaking through them.
